A Residence Built on
Patience and Attention
Cheung Sau exists because good company and a well-kept home can make an enormous difference to how older adults experience each day.
← Back to HomeHow Cheung Sau Came to Be
The name Cheung Sau — 長壽居 — carries a straightforward wish: long life, lived well. The residence opened on Prince Edward Road West with a small number of rooms and a team drawn from the neighbourhood. The founders, themselves from families with older parents in Hong Kong, wanted something they could not easily find elsewhere: a place that felt like a home rather than a facility, staffed by people who genuinely wanted to be there.
In the years since, the residence has grown carefully, adding rooms and staff only when the quality of daily care could be maintained. The building is well-placed — Mong Kok gives residents access to the markets, temples, parks and transport links they have known for decades — and the community inside it has developed its own quiet rhythms and small traditions.
The team meets every week to talk through the needs of each resident, adjust routines where something is not working, and plan the month's outings. New staff spend time shadowing established team members before they take on responsibility of their own. It is a deliberate pace, and one that residents and their families seem to appreciate.
Cheung Sau does not try to be all things. There is no medical unit, no rehabilitation programme, no memory care ward. The residence is for older adults who are broadly independent, who may want a little practical help with everyday life, and who value the reassurance of knowing a familiar person is close by. For residents who develop more complex health needs over time, the team works with families to find appropriate next steps.
The Team
A small group of people who have chosen this work because they find it meaningful.
Lam Wai-Yee
Residence Manager
Wai-Yee has worked in residential care in Kowloon for over twelve years. She oversees the day-to-day running of Cheung Sau and is the first point of contact for families with questions or concerns.
Chan Ka-Wai
Senior Resident Host
Ka-Wai has been with Cheung Sau since the earliest days. He leads the outings programme and is known among residents for remembering exactly which dim sum each person prefers on a Saturday morning.
Tse Hiu-Tung
Household & Dining Coordinator
Hiu-Tung manages housekeeping, meal planning and the practical arrangements that keep the residence comfortable. She liaises closely with residents about their preferences and adjusts routines as needed.
How We Work
The standards we hold ourselves to, day in and day out.
Staff Continuity
Residents are looked after by a consistent, small team. We limit staff rotation so that relationships can form and residents are never dealing with a stranger.
Regular Team Reviews
Each week the team reviews the needs of every resident, noting any changes in preference, routine or wellbeing and adjusting the plan accordingly.
Accessible Building Design
Step-free throughout, with wide corridors, good lighting and thoughtful layouts that make moving around straightforward and safe for everyone.
Privacy Respected
Resident information is held in confidence. Team members understand that discretion is a basic courtesy, not an afterthought.
Thoughtful Dining
Meals are prepared with attention to variety, texture and preference. The dining room is a social space, not just a refuelling stop.
Family Communication
Families receive regular updates and are always welcome to call or visit. Significant changes in a resident's routine are communicated promptly.
Senior Living in Hong Kong — What Cheung Sau Offers
Older adults in Hong Kong have a range of options when thinking about where to live as they get older. Cheung Sau sits in a particular part of that landscape: a non-medical, community-based residence that provides genuine support without the institutional character of a care home.
The address in Mong Kok matters. Residents stay in the part of the city they know — close to the flower market, the jade market, the wet markets and the MTR. For many people, remaining in Kowloon is not a preference so much as a deep attachment, and Cheung Sau honours that.
The three living arrangements — Daily Living Support, Excursions and Day Outings, and Complete Residence Living — allow residents and families to choose the level of involvement that feels right. Some residents want only a little practical help each week; others prefer the simplicity of an all-in arrangement where everything is looked after. Both are equally welcome, and the choice can be reviewed at any time.
What does not change, regardless of arrangement, is the quality of attention. Cheung Sau is a small residence by design. The team knows each resident's name, their habits, the things that matter to them. That familiarity is, in the end, what the residence is built around.
