"I was not sure how I would feel about moving somewhere new at my age. But within the first two weeks, Ka-Wai had already learned which tea I prefer in the morning. It is a small thing, but it matters. I feel looked after without feeling managed."

In Their Own Words

"My mother has been at Cheung Sau for eleven months. What struck me early on was that Wai-Yee contacted me when my mother's routine changed slightly — not because anything was wrong, but because they thought I would want to know. That kind of attentiveness is rare."
"The outings are the part I enjoy most. Last month we went to the flower market — I used to go there every week when I was younger, and I had not been in years. The group is small enough that you can walk at your own speed and stop when you want."
"My father is not easy to please. He lived alone for fifteen years and was very set in his habits. After six months at Cheung Sau, he still asks me to bring specific snacks on my visits — but he has stopped asking when he can go back to his old flat. I take that as a good sign."
"I wanted to stay in Kowloon. That was the condition I gave my children when we talked about this. Cheung Sau is on a road I have known my whole life. I can hear the street from my window and I can walk to the wet market when I want to. That matters more to me than most things."
"The pricing was what convinced me. I have looked at other places and there are always extras — supplements for this, additions for that. With Cheung Sau, the fee they quoted in the first meeting is what we pay. I can budget for it without worrying."
A Few Stories in More Detail
How the move to Cheung Sau unfolded for three different residents.
Mrs Pang, 79 — Moving After Many Years Alone
Mrs Pang had lived alone in Sham Shui Po since her husband passed. Her children, who live in Tuen Mun and Yuen Long, were concerned about the number of small tasks she was letting slide — and about the silence in her life.
She started with the Daily Living Support arrangement — a few visits per week from the same host. Within a month, the laundry was done, the errands were handled, and she had someone to have tea with on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons.
Mrs Pang moved into a full residence room after six months. She says she kept delaying the decision, and then wondered why she had waited. Her children visit on Sundays and the three of them often join the weekly outing together.
Mr Ho, 83 — Staying Close to What He Knows
Mr Ho is a former hardware trader who spent fifty years in Mong Kok. His one condition when his family raised the idea of a residence was that it had to be in Kowloon. He had no interest in moving to a quieter district.
He joined the Complete Residence Living arrangement, and within three weeks had identified every decent char siu bao within two streets. The team now includes a monthly visit to his favourite bakery in the outings schedule.
Mr Ho is one of the longer-established residents. He is known for advising newer residents on which markets are worth visiting and which are not. He has not mentioned leaving.
Mrs Cheung, 76 — Keeping the City Alive
Mrs Cheung was still largely independent but found that she was going out less and less. The effort of arranging transport and managing unexpected queues had made city trips feel more trouble than they were worth.
She joined the Excursions arrangement. Having transport arranged and a host alongside meant she could focus on enjoying the trip rather than managing it. The first outing was to the harbourfront; she said she had not been since the handover.
Mrs Cheung regularly suggests destinations for the monthly outings and has introduced three other residents to a teahouse in Yau Ma Tei that is now a regular stop. She describes the group as her second family.
